Keller 2015

Best Vintage On Record! First Hipping Tba since 1900!!!

The Keller 2015’s are very special. A vintage like this doesn’t come along very often. Klaus-Peter Keller’s father, Klaus, believes it to be better than the legendary 1971 and the also best he has ever seen. Hipping 2015 Trockenbeerenauslese (Tba) was achievable for the first time in 115 years!

The grapes for the dry wines were harvested clean and perfectly ripe whilst the grapes for sweet wines picked late, with botrytis and without. The sweet wines without botrytis (Kabinett, Spatlese and Auslese) were made from grapes dried perfectly by the sun and wind. “The advantage of healthy dried grapes is increasing acidity, almost proportional to the volume loss, giving the grape juice crystal clear aromas and a fantastic high acidity. I cannot remember ever having late harvest musts weights with this brilliance in the cellar – they were picked with an acidity of 11-13 mg/ml!”K.P Keller

But it is also almost unprecedented that so many bunches were so perfectly botrytised that instead of picking berry-by-berry with scissors as is normal, many bunches were simply picked whole! “With the class of 2015 in the cellar we have been richly rewarded. The clarity and precision of the fruit combined with radiant acidity is simply overwhelming! Riesling is perfect and for example we made our first Hipping Tba. The last time Hipping gave grapes for Tba was 1900! The Rieslaner wines are erotic-exotic elixirs tasting extraordinary good already. The Trockenbeerenauslese from very old vines in Silberberg is a powerful, racy package with charming fruitiness and complexity. Yes, 2015 is really a sweet wine Valhalla with an incredible amount of sweet wines; more than 25 different wines! Batches of Tba range from 27 – 500Lt” K.P Keller

ARRIVING MID-APRIL
KELLER GRUNER SILVANER TROCKEN 2015

Silvaner shows the class of the vintage and the age of the vines with more depth than you would think. As a blind wine most wine enthusiasts would pick it as riesling because it’s fairly dry and has lemon, pawpaw and mandarin notes. It’s fresh, juicy, succulent and vibrant with a nice hint of “Keller” grip and mouth-feel.

ARRIVING MID-MAY
KELLER RIESLING TROCKEN 2015

The “Limestone” offered below, is picked early from the same vines that make this wine. That has the effect of enabling the vine to perfectly ripen the grapes for this dry wine. It is always very intense, pure, glistening and precise; it “dances” on the palate with seamlessness derived from quality and balance. It’s difficult to define where the fruit succulence, acidity, texture and alcohol start or finish, but the overall impression is one of vibrancy, high quality AND drinkability.

KELLER RIESLING ‘LIMESTONE’ 2015

This wine is not made every year as it usually results from an early picking in a warm year that is like a “late green harvest”. “If you thin out too early the other grapes ripen too quickly and that‘s not what we want. We want a long and slow ripening process to gain as much compleixity as possible. Too early harvest brings one dimensional fruit and average aging potential. So in the warmer years we we pick a part of the crop for “Limestone”. K-P Keller.
The grapes were perfect and the acidity 10g/lt, RS 20g/lt, 10% alc. and a pH under 3. Probably a wine that will live for many decades if the juicy, succulence and enticing tropical fruit nuances don’t force you to succumb. If you have tasted the 2014 Limestone you may wonder it could possibly get better.

KELLER RIESLING TROCKEN ‘VON DER FELS’ 2015

Von de Fels is “from the rocks”, a dry riesling from the vines between about 10-25 years’ age grown on hard limestone. The high active lime content, inhibits the vines’ uptake of certain elements and this has a crop-lowering effect (see the picture of small bunch above). This is often bolstered by the inclusion of fouders from Morstein and Abtserde. It is very intense, minerally/steely, beautifully fruit driven, long and classy.

KELLER RIESLING KABINETT ‘LIMESTONE’ 2015

A wine that we have not seen before in Australia. What Keller Limestone is to the Trocken Riesling; Limestone Kabinett is to Von der Fels. In this vintage the wine is 10g/lt acidity, 40 g/lt RS and around 9% alc. There is purity and intensity from perfectly formed grape bunches with lots of tiny berries with no seeds, in amongst normal sized grapes. We have already pre-sold ½ of our allocation of this wine.

ARRIVING MID-AUGUST
KELLER RIESLING AUSLESE KIRCHSPEIL 750ml 2015

This is as sweet as they go with late picked grapes and no (or very little) botrytis. In terms of flavour impact and drive, we are surprised that this is so cheap. Consider this, perfect balance, perfect vintage, a well reputed Grossen Lagen (Grand Cru) and one of Germany’s best estates!

KELLER RIESLING AUSLESE MORSTEIN 2015 375ml

“From Morstein, we produce a vibrant Riesling Auslese in half bottles. All great stuff from old vines – the 2014 vintage has just scored 94 points in The Wine Advocate – 2015 is a league of its own.” – K.P Keller.

KELLER RIESLING AUSLESE *** HUBACKER 2015 375ml – SOLD OUT

Note the *** and the long gold capsule; this is a rare wine designated as the best barrel of Hubacker. A small-batch that represents what the winemaker is striving for. A small number of bottles will probably be auctioned at the official industry body’s auction and the wines are usually very expensive! Here’s a note from jancisrobinson.com for the 2013 vintage, but remember the 2015 is better! “18.5. Much more apricot than citrus at first but then there is a quince aroma too. Tastes much, much sweeter than the Morstein Auslese, more viscous and generous and fills the palate more even though there is a tight intense core. Great purity, too.”

KELLER CUVEE TROCKENBEERENAUSLESE 375ml

If you are of legal drinking age, this wine will most probably outlive you! Obviously a blend of sites because there was almost an embarrassing choice of lovely perfect botrytis bunches to choose from, in many sites. It’s also a blend of predominantly Riesling and Rieslaner.

“The Cuvee Tba is also a price / quality winner – we use the first noble sweet berries to make this wine. So in some years this wine is perhaps a bit less refined than the top top in our portfolio. To explain in scores : in a normal vintage the Cuvee Tba is perhaps a 92 point wine , in a vintage like 2015 I have no problems to score it 96. For Riesling Tba it’s a unique vintage.” – K.P Keller

Here is a note for the 2007 (a lesser vintage) from jancisrobinson.com “18.5. A blend of Scheurebe, Rieslaner and Riesling. Gorgeous honeyed, caramelised apricots and orange marmalade leap out of the glass. Incredibly viscous and utterly unspittable. Later: so gorgeous it makes me laugh. Both complex and pure, intensely sweet and still fresh though it is thick and viscous and slow-flowing over the palate. Goes on for ever. A little beauty!”

KELLER RIESLANER BEERENAUSLESE SILBERBERG 375ml

Rieslaner (riesling crossed with, you guessed it, silvaner) is often a more “tropical” expression than riesling. But the reason why the Keller family prize their 55yo vines in the Silberberg plot is because the variety hold its acidity well as the sugars rise and it makes monumental sweet wines. A quick search of jancisrobinson.com shows that this and the Tba from Silberberg Rieslaner score 18-19/20 easily.

KELLER RIESLANER TROCKENBEERENAUSLESE SILBERBERG 375ml – SOLD OUT

This review is an indicative one as it’s for the 2014.
“19/20. I thought this was a stunning wine. Super-intense grapefruit aroma. Completely unspittable. Such overwhelming intensity it takes over all your senses and turns you inside out, filling you with essence of orange and apricot.” jancisrobinson.com

KELLER RIESLING BEERENAUSLESE PETTENTHAL 375ml
Only 1 dozen allocated for Australia!

Liquid gold from the red slopes of Nierstein. A wine of laser-like intensity and diamond purity.
A review of the 2013 vintage “19/20 Slightly paler than the Scheurebe and aromas of apricot rather than the grapefruit. There is still, amazingly, a stoniness to the aroma, even with all that rich sweetness, adding complexity. Fabulously concentrated and rich but the acidity is so bright it almost tastes spicy on the tip of your tongue. Orange and apricot and barley sugar on the palate. So finely balanced the sweetness is easy but you have to take this wine very slowly. Pure, sweet pleasure without being in the least cloying thanks to the acidity. Endlessly long and great depth to the fruit.” Julia Harding, jancisrobinson.com
