Heart Wines

Archie Old Vine Grenache

Heartwines is a label that utilises enthusiastic non-interventionist winemakers who use locally grown fruit to make small and unique batches of hand-made wines. Tessa Brown is the Fiano and Pinot Gris + 3 queen. Peter Fraser slaves over the 70+ yo organically grown bush-vines to make Danger Shiraz, Archie Grenache and Ruby Rosé. Mark Kelly makes a flavoursome yet restrained and mineral Beechworth Chardonnay, grown on granite soil.

Heartwines ‘La Biche’ Fiano
Barrel fermented, foot stomped, basket pressed, wild yeast, left on lees for 12 months. 100% malolactic fermentation but still has a low 3.1 ph and acid level of 8 ta. made with love by Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown.

Heartwines Pinot Gris +3
“It’s 37% PiG, 30% Riesling, 21% Fiano and 12% Gewurztraminer. Pretty funky and sweaty smelling thing, but the upside is clean and juicy flavour, with an appealing slightly powdery texture. Juicy pears, musk, a little spice and lychee, then kind of earthy on a clean finish of solid length, almost a lemon barley aftertaste. Good interest factor here too, in amongst everything else.” – 90 Points Gary Walsh, WineFront.com.au

Heartwines ‘Victor’ Chardonnay
100% old-oak-barrel fermentation. “Cool” core of natural acidity. Only 300 cases made.
“…Lots of almond and malt characters, while the palate is lean and very dry, tighly-focused, and restrained. It’s quite intense and Chablis-like in its savouriness…the dryness of the aftertaste is mouth-puckering and appetizing.” – 92 Points Huon Hooke, Huon Hooke.com

Heartwines Ruby Rose
100% Grenache Rose from vines at the cooler end of McLaren Vale. Bone dry and utterly delicious. Made by Peter Fraser at Yangarra. Made from organic Grenache this is a standout rosé. Dry, light and crisp with rose petals, raspberry and a touch of mint.

Heartwines ‘Archie’ Old-Vine Grenache
“Flowers, juicy raspberry, hazelnuts and sugared almond, exotic spices, a subtle earthiness. Medium bodied, ample flavour but not sweet, as such, and pulled into shape by cool almost ‘minerally’ acidity and fine sandy tannin, and a very long earthy red-fruited finish. Here’s a wine with a pulse! Bloody beautiful.” – 95 Points Gary Walsh, WineFront.com.au

“Deepish purple/red colour with a spicy, peppery aroma, a hint of chocolate and a rich, dense, textured palate. Good concentration and fleshiness. There are ample tannins, almost as if there was some shiraz in it. The finish is firm-ish and the wine has real gravitas. An excellent wine.” – 93 Points, Huon Hooke, HuonHooke.com

Heartwines Danger Shiraz
Handpicked from mature vines, this wine hails from the cooler parts of McLaren Vale. At a higher elevation than most of the district, the vines enjoy cooler temperatures, giving a wine of vibrancy, while maintaining the inherent generosity for which the Vale is famous. 25% whole bunch natural ferment and aged in old French barriques.
