France – Chablis
Didier & Pascal Picq
This is a tiny domaine with the two Picq brothers overseeing vineyard and cellar. Their father also works in the vines and their sister looks after administration, it’s a family affair. The pursuit of ‘earth to glass’ purity using chardonnay as a conduit is obvious to all who taste these wines. There is a range of 6 wines with no Grand Cru‘s, some believing that this fact drives the family harder and pushes quality further. Picq’s low yields give him good strength & acidity, and his wines always have nerve. He vinifies only in stainless steel tanks. He uses a large portion of yeast lees and a longer lees ageing time than most.
Gilbert Picq Chablis 2015
“Scintillating scents of mixed mineral-like stones and things, whiff of lime juice, green leaves, green apple, spot on Chablis-ish sort of stuff, though there’s a touch of ‘funky’ nuttiness in there too. Some quiet richness to texture, a slip and slide of nutty character, but still holds that Chablis freshness and mineral-talc charm. Lovely drinking.” – 91 Points Mike Bennie, WineFront.com.au
CHABLIS AOC (2010)
“An extremely fresh and highly expressive nose of classic Chablis aromas that include green fruit, iodine and oyster shell where the latter element can also be found on the impressively rich and well-concentrated flavors that possess solid underlying tension and length on the complex and sappy finish.” – Burghound.com
DESSUS LA CARRIÈRE
Dessus la Carrière is made from two lieux-dits: 33 year old vines on west-facing Semon and 30 year-old vines at Paradis which faces due south. The two sites share a very unusual sub- soil of solid limestone rock; they sit above an abandoned lime- stone quarry. The age of the vines and the terroir of uneroded rock make for a bracing, textbook expression of minerality. Ageing in stainless steel tanks allows this to come through with great purity and transparency.
CHABLIS VIEILLES VIGNES (2010)
“This is also ripe but entirely classic with a pretty combination of white and yellow orchard fruit, sea breeze and a hint of mineral reduction that gives way to strikingly intense iodine-in ected medium-bodied avors that are blessed with an abundance of dry extract that stains the palate on the balanced and solidly long. This delivers excellent quality for its level and is recommended.” – Burghound.com
CHABLIS 1ER ‘VOSGROS’ (2010)
“A slightly riper nose of yellow orchard fruit, spice and floral hints merges into dense, vibrant and full-bodied flavors that possess solid power and plenty of punch on the opulent and mouth coating finish.” – Burghound.com
CHABLIS 1ER ‘VAUCOUPIN’ (2010)
“This too offers a completely classic nose of restrained green fruit, oyster shell and an overt mineral reduction component that complements the pure and intense flavors that offer good richness on the beautifully refreshing and energetic finish.” – Burghound.com
