Weingut Joh. Bapt. Schäfer

Nahe – Germany

Established in 1900, the winery is located in the lower Nahe with 8 ha of vineyards on loam and weathered slate. 4th generation winemaker Sebastian Schäfer has been running the winery since 2002. Natural fermentations, old oak and stainless steel are used. Sebastian Schäfer, a young dynamo who, since taking over the helm of this small Nahe winery from his ailing dad in 2002, has created magic wines that now have the
likes of K-P Keller singing his praises! At 20 years of age, he was awarded a placement in the Gault Millau Wine Guide and in 2013 the reputation of the estate took a giant step when he was invited to be a member of the Nahe VDP.

Pittermännchen Riesling GG 2015

“The weathered slate gives the Riesling citrus and peach aromas, herbal-spicy notes as well as a mineral character rich in pressure and tension.” – Sebastian Schäfer

“Clean, herbaceous aromas open the sensory curtain. Fresh grapefruit and ripe, lemony acidity not only stimulate the salivary glands but also give Schäfer’s Pittermännchen a really invigorating edge.” -17.5/20 Points, JancisRobinson.com

“Opens with a clear, intense, spicy/mineral and herbal bouquet with ripe, well concentrated fruit aromas typical for the weathered Tonschiefer soils of this cru. The slate flavors are lovely, clear and precise here, giving this wine an almost aristocratic attitude. Round, yet pure, piquant and highly elegant on the palate, this is an intense, complex and very persistent Pittermännchen.” – 92+ Points RobertParker.com

“…Notes of lemon and tangerine. The balance of this wine is very Mosel-like, and it has the kind of spritz and very bracing acidity I associate with those wines.” – 92 Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com
